4-Colour Forward: New Comics Coming Out Wed. July 29/15

27 Jul

Welcome to The DeanBlog’s first comic book preview column, “4-Colour Forward”!  Every Monday I’ll post what I think will be the big books (or related items) that will be coming out to your Local Comic Store that Wednesday.  I’ll be heading to the store I’ve been hanging out at ever since it opened over 20+ years ago – Lookin’ For Heroes in Kitchener, Ontario.  And you know, this blog could seriously use a sponsor……hmmmm…….anyway, on to the books!

Star Wars #7 – Marvel – $3.99

The Marvel Star Wars ‘reboot’ has been nothing but magnificent.  The headline book takes a one-issue break after the initial 6-part arc by presenting a tale of Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi dealing with mercenary scum on Tatooine!  Writer Jason Aaron teams with guest artist Simone Bianchi for this one-off, and so far Aaron has done no wrong!

Daredevil #17 – Marvel – $3.99

A new Mark Waid/Chris Samnee Daredevil issue?  Yes please!

Thors #2 – Marvel – $3.99

Writer Jason Aaron heads this series, one of the few coming out of “Secret Wars” that is compelling in its own right.  And it looks like we’re getting a Groot Thor!  Shut up and take my money!

Batgirl #42 – DC – $2.99

Batgirl #42

Lots of Batgirl this week – Annual #3 ($4.99) is also out, with stories involving Dick Grayson and Gotham Academy! – but the main book continues with the ‘new’ Batman and a newly-redesigned Livewire!  Writers Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher, and artist Babs Tarr, continue to bring the goods to the re-invigoration of this classic character!

Superman #42 – DC – $3.99

Superman #42

The next part of “Truth” plays out here!  If you want to know how Superman ended up in the pickle he’s in in his other books, you gotta pick this series up!  Writer Gene Luen Yang and artists John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson are definitely bringing it to this book!

Justice League: Gods and Monsters – Superman #1 – DC – $3.99

Writers J.M. DeMatteis and Bruce Timm, and artist Moritat, deliver the prequel to the Justice League: Gods and Monsters direct-to-home DC Universe movie (which comes out Tuesday the 27th).  We have here an alternate universe, and in this version Superman was raised by poor immigrant farmers, and grows up to be angry.  Very angry, indeed.

X-Files 2015 Annual – IDW – $7.99

This is a continuation of the original TV series and has nothing to do with the continuation currently in production.  Got it?  Good!  Cuz these are good books on their own anyway.  And this should be no exception:  “Each year on the anniversary of his sister’s abduction, Mulder investigates the mysterious disappearance of a child in an effort to bring others peace. This year’s search takes him to the high school reunion of a teen who disappeared in an abandoned house with friends who would go on to start their very own ghost-hunting show.”  The premise makes sense in regards to Mulder’s character, and I’m looking forward to what writer Mike Raicht and artist Kevin VanHook produce.

Sonic Boom #10 – Archie – $3.99

Part 10 of the Sonic/MegaMan mega crossover “Worlds Unite”  What more do you need to know than what’s in the press release: “Featuring the worlds of Viewtiful Joe, Golden Axe, Breath of Fire, Panzer Dragoon, Billy Hatcher, Monster Hunter, and more!”  Merging the Sega and Capcom worlds has been a blast, and writer Ian Flynn, along with artists Tyson Hesse and Jim Amash, are bringing this 12-part epic to new levels of explosiveness!

Let’s take a look at some of the Funko Pop!s ($10.99 SRP) you might find in your store this week:

POP! Television #223 – “Doctor Who” – Dalek

POP! Movies #146 – “The Breakfast Club” John Bender

Recreate the John Hughes classic at home with this and other characters from the movie coming out this week!  (Do they have Ferris Bueller out too?!)

There’s also Funko Pop sets out this week for Battlestar Galactica, American Horror Story, Boondock Saints, Orange is the New Black, Sesame Street,  Star Trek: The Next Generation and Tomorrowland among others!  Head down to your store this week to watch your collection grow – and your wallet shrink!

Well, that’s what I got this week, let me know what you’re looking forward to!
