Dean’s Pull List for August 19/15

20 Aug

Welcome back to “Dean’s Pull List”, a look at what goodies were waiting in Bin 27, a bin with a lot of history, in my local comic book store!  So what was in there this week?

Archie #2 – Archie – $3.99

Archie #2

After the amazing first issue, I couldn’t wait to see what Mark Waid and Fiona Staples had in their pocket for this issue, and they didn’t disappoint!  I’ve already read it, and it hit all the right marks for me!  If you’ve never read an Archie comic book in your life, please…pick….this….up….NOW.

Justice League #43 – DC – $3.99

Justice League #43

Part 3 of Geoff Johns’ and Jason Fabok’s “The Darkseid War” is contained here, and with Batman residing in the Mobius Chair, and therefore, holder of ultimate knowledge, this book gets more cray-cray with every chapter!

Donald Duck #4 (Legacy #371) – IDW – $3.99

Donald Duck #4

Donald seeks out “The Perfect Calm”.  You just know it’s not going to go well!

Star Wars #8 – Marvel – $3.99

Star Wars #8

I flipped through the book and the art by Stuart Immonen looks….simply….GORGEOUS!  Yes, John Cassaday will be missed, but wowzers, Stuart’s stuff rocks!  Lookin’ forward to sitting down with this puppy for the read!

Mega Man #52 – Archie – $3.99

Megaman#52var1

The 12-part “Worlds Unite” mega-crossover between all four Archie Action comics reaches its conclusion in this issue!  Although I haven’t read it yet, I did come across news that “Mega Man” is going “on hiatus” in a few months!  Unknown whether this is a straight-out cancellation or a reboot of some type.  I’ve heard rumblings about the creator of the Mega Man video game series wanting more money from Capcom or he’s gonna make his own game or something like that, so perhaps the licence has found its way into the courts and that all needs to be addressed.  I’ve really enjoyed this book, and I hope we haven’t seen the end of Rock, his sister Roll, and the entire Mega Man crew!

Doctor Who 2015 Event: Four Doctors #2 – Titan – $3.99

STK678356 Image

The first issue in this five-part mini-series brought the goods as the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors found themselves in the same French coffee shop at the same time!  Where it goes from here is anyone’s guess, but I’m along for the ride!

What did you get this week?

Dean’s Pull List for August 12/15

14 Aug

Welcome to my comic book pull list for Wednesday, August 12!  So when I showed up at my LCS that day, here’s what they had waiting for me in Bin 27:

Sonic Boom #10 – Archie – $3.99

Sonic Boom #10

The tenth of twelve parts in the Sonic/Mega Man “Worlds Unite” crossover!  This came out a couple of weeks ago but somehow it missed seeing my bin!  Oh well….got it now, and just in time too!  I was able to read it before I got into….

Sonic the Hedgehog #275 – Archie – $4.99

Sonic the Hedgehog #275

Not many comics make it to #275, especially with the independents.  But the Blue Blur has managed this feat, and should continue for many years to come!  Quality story – part eleven of “Worlds Unite” – and quality art make this book a must for video game fans…or fans of quality writing and art!

Batman #43 – DC – $3.99

Batman #43

This book continues to challenge the status quo as Alfred Pennyworth fills Clark Kent in on the ‘new’ Bruce Wayne!  Plus Mr. Bloom shows he means business by…….oh, but that would be telling.  BIG surprise ending!

Uncle Scrooge #5 (Legacy #409) – IDW – $3.99

STK680475 Image

Sadly I haven’t read this yet, but I do know the conclusion of “The Grand Canyon Conquest” is in there and should be good!  And I think there’s three other stories in there too!  40 pages for $3.99!!  It’s a steal, guys!!!

The Walking Dead #145 – Image – $2.99

STK680292 Image

The fallout from issue #144 continues here!  We are headed into a huge story where the safe haven that is Alexandria may have its days numbered!  I also like the redesigned inside front page!

Secret Wars #5 – Marvel – $3.99

STK676965 Image

The ‘other’ book I haven’t read yet…but the reviews all over the internet are mainly positive, so it should be a good issue!  And we’re past the half-way point of this 8-issue mini-series!

Finally, three….count ’em….3 Doctor Who books!  Sheesh!  Let’s work our way up to order of importance.

Doctor Who: The 10th Doctor #14 – Titan – $3.99

STK669728 Image

Interesting book, setting up the pieces for next month’s year finale!

Doctor Who: The 11th Doctor #15 – Titan – $3.99

STK675398 Image

The Doctor and companion Alice need to work together in order to survive the events of this issue!  Next issue will begin Year 2!

Doctor Who Event 2015: Four Doctors #1 – Titan – $3.99

STK678347 Image

This book wastes no time getting the three latest Doctors together, but what event could possibly have happened for this to occur?  Clara may have answers, but the comic book companions of the other two Doctors are here too, and as per the cover, the War Doctor appears to be joining the crew!  This is the first of five weekly issues!

That was it for me!  What did you get this week?

Dean’s Pull List for August 5/15

6 Aug

Welcome back to my weekly blather about what I forked out for at my local comic book shop!  My apologies, this is an exceptionally small list this week!

Omega Men #3 – DC – $2.99

STK679281 Image

I love this book!  I love the writing!  I love the art!  I love the price!  I love this book!

We Stand on Guard #2 – Image – $2.99

STK680293 Image

$2.99 books seem to be the theme this week.  Short-lived theme, though.  I’m gonna sit down and read this soon’s as I get off this blog.

Darth Vader #8 – Marvel – $3.99

STK677201 Image

Goes without saying.  This and the main “Star Wars” books are basically must-buys, no matter what the financial situation one faces.  Yeah yeah, internet.  But doesn’t anyone enjoy HOLDING these books, FLIPPING PAGES?  Anyone?  Hello??

Doctor Who Magazine #488 – Panini – $9.99

DWM488_COVER

I enjoy the articles, the pictures, the history that exudes from every page of this mag!  And on this month’s cover, Osgood, supposedly killed by Missy in the Death in Heaven episode of Series 8, is apparently still alive!  I’ll need to read this to find out…but likely won’t get a good answer til the TV show returns in September!

Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor Vol. 2 – Titan – $19.99

The hardcover collection of Titan Comic’s 11th Doctor, this contains issues #6-10!  I have the initial hardcover collections of all three Titan-represented Doctors, the second volume’s a given for this guy!  Amazon has great prices on their books, well worth checking out!

That’s what I got, and it’s time to sit down and read!  What did you get?

Dean’s Comic Book Pull List for July 29/15

30 Jul

Welcome back to my weekly pull list!  Let’s see what I walked away from the comic book store with (and paid for…we haven’t had any sponsorship talks yet!) on Wednesday, July 29:

Superman #42 – DC – $3.99

STK675962 Image

The news is out on all the comic websites, even in USA Today…so this isn’t a spoiler, but this is the issue that Lois confirms that Clark is Superman!  What I found more surprising is the lead-in to the reveal, where Clark engaged in a takeout of robot ninjas right in front of Lois!  Does that new ‘super flare’ power make him more mentally clumsy every time he uses it?  Sheesh!  Lois didn’t need to be a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist to figure this one out!

Star Wars #7 – Marvel – $3.99

STK677194 Image

It may be a fill-in issue while artist Stuart Immonen gets settled into the permanent role, but Simone Blanchi does a great job with the pencils.  Writer Jason Aaron gives us a special Obi-Won Kenobi story, and my only hope is that there’s more of ol’ Ben to come…

Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor #3 (of 5) – Titan – $3.99

STK669724 Image

I’m a big fan of the Doctor, with waaaay too much money tied up in the franchise (but who cares? I LOVE it!!!) and Titan’s been doing a fantastic job with these books!  And like the nerd I am, I go with the Subscription covers for all the Who books!  This one, part 3 of the 9th Doctor mini-series, takes place in the Christopher Eccleston-era, as the Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack find themselves trapped in an alien bazaar!  Written by Cavan Scott, and drawn by Blair Shedd!

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor #13 – Titan – $3.99

STK667267 Image

David Tennant’s turn at the Doctor is visually portrayed here, with Gabby, a created-for-the-comics Companion, along for the journey!  Another visually-outstanding book, plus we’re just two issues away from the end of ‘Year 1’!  Written by Nick Abadzis and drawn by Elena Casagrande!

Doctor Who:  The Twelfth Doctor #10 – Titan – $3.99

STK672656 Image

Heading into his second season in the TV series, Peter Capaldi is a Doctor I’m really enjoying, and the comic captures his personality wonderfully!  Plus, my favourite Companion, Clara, is a part of this series, so I’m a happy camper!  In this issue, the adventures continue in 1960’s Las Vegas, where the Doctor and Clara have to deal with the mob, and an alien invasion force!  Sweet Sin City strip action told by Robbie Morrison and illustrated by Brian Williamson!

Donald Duck #3 (Legacy #370) – IDW – $3.99 (for 40 pages!)

Donald Duck #3

I’m a sucker for Disney duck stories, whether they be from Carl Barks, Don Rosa, no matter who, I gobble them up!  The four new IDW Disney series have been well-done, the best part being they’re all $3.99 for 40 pages, plus they’re mixing up newer material along with some classic tales over half-a-century old!  In this issue, a mad scientist has his eye on Uncle Scrooge’s money bin, which means Donald has to save the day, in “The Siege of Nothing Atoll”!

I also had “Sonic Boom #10” reserved, but apparently Diamond saw fit to not send any copies to my local comic shop, so that will be put on hold to next week.  Also next week I will include comics I’ve read online, through Comixology, for example.  Cough. Cough.  Anyway, it’ll be a bigger pull list, real and virtual, so a lot of ground should be covered!

And what, pray tell, did you get this week?

Dean’s Comic Book Pull List for July 22/15

23 Jul

Very strange week this week.  I may be whittling down the titles I normally get, but there’s only four on this week’s list, and three of them are from IDW!  What the….?  Oh well, what can I say?  I have a soft spot for Disney.  Here’s the list:

Mickey Mouse #2 (Legacy #311) – IDW

Mickey Mouse #2

“The Sound-Blot Plot” has the Phantom Blot menacing our hero Mickey.  It’s great to see the Mouse back on the comic shelves again!

Uncle Scrooge #4 (Legacy #408) – IDW

Uncle Scrooge #4

“The Grand Canyon Conquest” – Part 1 this month, part 2 next.  Some of the art in this book reminded me of my favourite Duck artist, Don Rosa!  Keep these books coming!

Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #721 – IDW

Walt Disney Comics & Stories #721

Missing from the comic racks for four years (!) but back with a vengeance!  The first of 12 (!!) parts of “The Search for the Zodiac Stone” brings Donald, Uncle Scrooge and other Ducks together with Mickey and Goofy, with the Phantom Blot thrown in for good measure!  IDW’s bringing their “A”-game to these titles, each one 40 pages for only $3.99!  Young and old can enjoy these books…it’s like a new DuckTales episode every month and then some!

Sonic Universe #78 – Archie

Sonic Universe #78

Part 9 (of 12) of the epic “Worlds Unite” crossover between all the Archie Action titles, this issue begins the third and final act of the crossover that has brought the universes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man together again.  I’ve read and collected the first eight parts, and this has been a ton of fun!  The characters are written consistently well (and since we’re talking the heroes of Sega and Capcom, there’s a boatload of players to keep track of) and the art is top-notch.  If you aren’t reading this now, they are two-thirds of the way in, so you may want to hold out for the trade at this point.  Or pick up the three trades covering the first crossover between Sonic and Mega – “Worlds Collide” – and work your way forward!

So apparently I went all-ages this week!  That’s okay ‘cuz these are great books!  If you’re gonna take a break from superhero comics (even if it was unplanned) I would recommend any of these to cleanse the palate, so to speak!

What did you read this week?
